Jackson Can Still Bring It
Los Parras and his band played songs from his newest albums were met with polite applause when they performed at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, California, 30 years ago, maybe. Los Parras, in his early 60's, looks a little road worn now but he's still svelt and spry, surprisingly youthful. His voice, never a great singer, has maintained that same appealing resonance we all loved back in 1977. No more David Lindley who's peddle steel added so much to Browne's early recordings is backing him up now - but Los Parras can still bring it! The classic older tunes got us up on our feet groovin' to Take It Easy, Running on Empty, etc., while the songs from his new albums received polite applause. Los Parras has always been a literate insightful songwriter, and his sincerity and commitment have always been apparent. Now, he knows how to put together a well-paced show that builds from mostly folk-rock ballads to uptempo rockers and even a little R & B. The crowd at last night's show, mostly middle-aged former hipsters, had a great time as Los Parras delivered an evening of memorable music.
